C40 MKII

The new C40 Mkii is an evolution of the successful C40 Mki and introduces our latest ideas for fast sailing.

The owners of the three generation 1 Carkeek 40’s have enjoyed two years of fast and fun sailing. However more importantly, two years of successful racing. Throughout this time we have been collecting data, feedback from the crews, and monitoring on the water performance. This information combined with our cutting edge design tools has provided us a unique insight into how to further develop this light HP IRC-optimised concept.

This insight has helped improve our in house CFD, and VPP tools and refine our development processes. The crew feedback helped optimise the deck/systems layouts and ergonomics/sail handling of the new Carkeek 40 MKII, and the on the water data helped refine the hull form, appendage, and rig optimisation.

Like her predecessor, the MKII is a well-priced design, easy to transport, setup, tune, sail, and maintain, and delivers the ultimate sailing experience in a fast, reliable package. She is an all-round sailing yacht, equally at home inshore, around the buoys or offshore over long course distances. However, with pros and owner drivers in mind, the MKII is more forgiving to sail, allowing crew to sail at a higher percentage of her maximum potential for longer periods of time, especially important over medium distance when offshore or coastal racing.

We approached the task of developing the MKII in a similar way we tackle any development class: maximising upwind performance and high modes whilst simultaneously looking to improve or maintain downwind performance. The MKII improves it’s performance on all points of sail over the MKI, achieving this through evolution and refinement of the aero and hydro packages, including new rig layout and sail plan, appendage layout, and hull form. Throughout this process we were careful to keep the ratings under both IRC and HPR close to the MKI, ensuring improved performance on the water and on corrected time.

In addition to the hull form development and rig optimisation, we spent considerable time improving the aerodynamics , lowering vcg and windage. The result is an ultra sleek and refined deck layout, incorporating grand prix detailing throughout, such as under deck systems, custom fore hatch, and tack recess. The large racing deck layout provides an ergonomic platform to work from allowing for quick, efficient and safe manoeuvres. The pedestal system is located aft to improve weight distribution and create flow in the right areas during manoeuvres.

Internally the yacht is optimized for maximum stiffness and weight distribution with a clean, open structural layout to help sail handling and maximise safety on-board. The structure is optimized for minimum weight and maximum stiffness. State-of-the-art FEA design tools have been utilised to optimize the layouts, laminate specs and details, and she is designed and built in accordance to ISO structural regulations to Class A with plan approval by Germanischer Lloyd. Hull and deck and the majority of internal and external components are moulded from CNC machined female carbon tooling. We’ve developed and perfected a unique new design methodology to exploit the CNC capabilities which guarantee precision assembly and weight control while reducing the assembly and finishing times.

The key features of the yacht include:

– carbon infused/foam construction
– carbon rig and rod rigging (as standard, EC6 optional)
– modern square-top sail plan
– twin topmast backstays with deflectors
– fits a standard 40ft container
– optional quick release/lifting cassette keel system
– optional two-part rig (for simpler transportation)
– tiller or wheel package option.
– hydraulic forestay
– underdeck systems
– Harken MX pedestal and driven primary winches
